Teeing off

Now in its 9th year, the US Kids World Championship returned to Pinehurst, NC.  Kyle was able to secure 2nd place with a 3 day total of 109; shooting rounds of 38-35-36.

The above picture is one of my favorites: the majestice Mid-Pines Resort and Kyle's tee shot on the last day, the last hole of the tournament.
Last year, Boys 7 played the Front 9 of the Mid-Pines GC and this year, Boys 8 returned to the Back 9. We were able to dodge the rain that hit on the first round but the heat and humidity were unrelenting.  The water, gatorade and umbrellas were everywhere. Kyle was wearing mostly white each day in effort to keep cool and even Paul had started wearing a hat.
It looked to be a closely contested Championship this year. On the first day, one golfer had the lead with 35, 7 were in with a 37 and Kyle was tied with 10 others at 38.  After round two, three golfers were tied with 37-35 and Kyle was one stroke back, tied with last year's winner, Galven Green.

So, for the final round, Kyle was in the second to the last group, teeing off at 1:35, with Solomon Thompson (New York) and Galven (Malaysia).  He bogeyed the first hole but settled down to play par golf until the 7th hole when he got his first birdie of the round putting him just one stroke behind Galven, last year's winner.  Galven had made his birdie early in the match but bogeyed the 7th hole and both boys made pars on the last hole - meaning they finished tied with a 36.  The scorecard playoff looked at the last 6 holes and Kyle was awarded 2nd place.

Once again - Team South Central won the Team Championship.  Digraj Gill - Boys 6 placed 4th overall; Rondarius Walters - Boys 7 was 14th overall; David Snyder - Boys 10 finished 10th; William Zalatoris - Boys 11 finished 4th and Connor Black - Boys 12 was Champion.
It was the third time that the boys from Texas came home with the Team trophy - the 2nd time for Kyle to be on the team.  Placing 2nd in his division guarantees his slot for next year for Boys 9.  Rondarius and William will stay on the team, Brad Dalke will return for Boys 11 and Scott Roden wins the Boys 7 slot.
As a footnote: when we returned for the 2009 World Championship, we learned that the Team Championship had been discontinued.

On the 2nd round, we all received a very special surprise.  Tom and Betty Anderson arrived to watch Kyle play.  We first met them 2 years ago when Kyle was on the driving range at Knollwood and he invited them to watch his 2nd round at Midland CC when he was competing for Boys 6.  That day, Kyle shot his best round, a 32, on the way to winning the tournament.  They were so gracious, asking Kyle to sign their hats and we were so excited to see them again and Tom was wearing the very hat that Kyle signed 2 years ago.  They followed us at Mid Pines and again, Kyle shot his best round: 35.
