2015 - This site was a scrapbook that I made for Kyle.  He is a Freshman in High School now, playing on the Varsity Golf team.  He is coached by Cameron McCormick and works hard training on and off the course.  He started playing the Boys 15 -18 division early in 2013.  By November, he won his first trophy in that division taking 3rd place.  In 2014, before his 14th birthday, he took 2nd in a playoff.  In December 2014 he won his 1st Boys 15-18 division event by 9 shots and then, 3 months later, he won again.  He's been looking at colleges and we're eager to see what the future holds.

A bit of Trivia

USKids Golf was a dominant part of our family from Kyle's 5th birthday in 2005 until just after his 12th birthday in 2012.  How dominant? I compared Kyle's participation with another junior golfer here in Dallas.  He and Kyle participated at all levels of USKids from the time they were 5, playing Boys 6 & Under, up until the World Cup when they were 12.  They both competed in 7 World Championships.  Kyle played in 4 Regional Events, 2 more than his fellow competitor; 2 State Championships/World Qualifier - 1 less than his friend.  Locally - Kyle played in 68 events.  He won 53, was 2nd eleven times, was 3rd only three times and one T6.  His friend - 60 events - 44 wins, 11 second place finishes, 3 third places, a fourth and a sixth place finish.

But, when I looked just at Kyle's division for the USKids World Championship - that's when I found some interesting statistics.  Kyle played in the Boys 6 & Under division as a 5 year old.  Only 3 other 5 year olds and Kyle returned to that division in 2006:  Kyle was T15th, AJ Beechler T26th, Garrett Barber T33rd, and Cody Transou T46th.

In 2006 - there were 81 golfers in the Boys 6 & Under division.  Of those 81 - only 13 - returned every year until they played the final division Boys 12.  Only 13.  Kyle Cox, Travis Vick, Brian Terlesky, Patrick Welch, Cody Transou, Jay Swarup, Garrett Barber, Ryan Gerard, Caden Prieskorn, Troy Taylor, Luke Harries (UK), Perry Xin (Can) and AJ Beechler.

In 2012 - their last year for USKids, of these 13 - who played in 7 World Championships - Kyle, Travis Vick, Brian Terlesky, Patrick Welch; only these 4 got to play Pinehurst No 2 on the World Cup Team.

People kept telling me not to worry - Kyle will do it - of course, he'll do it. But, not that I didn't want to believe - it's just that golf - like life - has no guarantees. I mean, anything could have happened - as it was - when he was suffering from heat exhaustion and vomiting the day before we left - it was so scary knowing that there wasn't going to be a "second chance" - there is no "he can try next year".  As I looked back at these statistics - I'm still in awe.
My mom thought perhaps Kyle had grown taller since she'd seen him before the trip. Personally, I think he looks taller because a load has been lifted from the pressure he put on himself to make that team.

2013 US Junior Amateur Champion

Scottie Scheffler & Kyle

Scottie Scheffler from Dallas, is 4 years older than Kyle, and a golfer that we had been following through the years.  A very successful junior golfer who has won multiple times at the Starburst Jr Championship and, according to his profile at the NTPGA, as an 8 yr old declared up to play with the 12-13 yr olds.  When Kyle was 8, back in 2008, he declared up and played in the B 12-13 division for a tournament at Bear Creek West.  He was paired with Scottie Scheffler and 2 other boys.  I remember being proud of Kyle and being very grateful to Scottie for treating Kyle as a fellow golfer regardless of his age.  Scottie won that day, with a 74. Three boys tied for 2nd with an 84 and Kyle tied for 5th with an 86.  It all came back, watching Scottie on the Golf Channel as he played the final round of the USGA Junior Amateur Championship - winning 3 & 2 - and so gracious in his interview. A big congratulations to Scottie, who has verbally committed to University of Texas.
